The Last Hurrah – The Programme

We are glad to announce that we have got a final programme for The Last Hurrah – our week of historical dance workshops and social dances!

As well as the morning workshops, we’ve organised some optional excursions and experiences to give a wee taste of Scotland in between dancing. You can find details of these below in the detailed programme.

DETAILED PROGRAMME

Sunday 3 August

18:30 – 19:30 Meet and Greet and Registration – Maitlandfield House Hotel, Haddington

19:30 – 23:00 – Ceilidh – Maitlandfield House Hotel, Haddington

There’s been a change to the venue for this part of our week – we’re now holding our meet-and-greet and opening ceilidh at the Maitlandfield House Hotel in Haddington.  Come along to say hello and enjoy a welcoming drink upon arrival. Start the dancing off with a bit of Scottish tradition, and then enjoy stovies* at half-time to refuel!

This event is also open to anyone not taking part in the week of workshops (see below for ticket details).  There’ll be a great local ceilidh band with a caller, and it will be a great opportunity to experience a proper Scottish ceilidh!

 * Stovies – a traditional Scottish dish based on potatoes.  Recipes vary, but the dish always contains potatoes with, variously, onions, carrots, other vegetables, roast beef, corned beef, minced beef or other meat. If you are vegetarian, let us know and  we’ll make sure there’s an alternative!

Monday 4 August

This converted church building will be our home for the dance workshop element of the week.  It is home to a local dance school – the Haddington School of Dance and Music – and its Great Hall is a big and airy space, perfect for our needs.

Afternoon – Optional trip to Glenkinchie Distillery

This is our very own local distillery, producing the wonderful Glenkichie Single Malt Whisky, one of the Lowland malts.  The trip includes a tour of the distillery production area, to see how the stuff is made, and finishes off in the bar for a tasting! It’s a five-star tourist attraction (this certification is awarded by VisitScotland, the Scottish tourist board), and well worth a visit! Should you wish to go home with a bottle (or two!), the tour includes a discount voucher.

No trip to this area of Scotland would be without the opportunity to view our splendid Edinburgh Castle! This tour gives us fast-track admission and free guided tours, when available. Afternoon – Ragtime Tea Dance at the Spiegeltent, Fringe-by-the-Sea, North Berwick

This will be a Ragtime Tea Dance as part of the Fringe-by-the-Sea, North Berwick, a well-respected and fun music and arts festival that runs in parallel with the bigger Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Not only is the setting amazing – North Berwick was a fashionable holiday resort in the 19^th century and remains ever so popular to this day – just entering the venue itself is a magical experience.  Spiegeltents (or mirror tents) were built in Belgium around the year 1900 to be used as travelling dance halls.  The numerous mirrors made it possible to make discreet eye-contact with other visitors!  They were legendary and are a symbol of wild fin-de-siècle nightlife. A great setting for our Tea Dance!

We have a great live band for our tea dance! The Ugly Bug Ragtime Three will be providing the music – it’s going to be just marvellous!

You don’t have to be participating in the dance week to attend the tea dance!  Tickets are available at £10 from Fringe by the Sea – or you can buy tickets in person from the Fringe by the Sea box office in North Berwick.

Evening – Grand Ball – The Last Hurrah, at Gosford House

 

 

We are so thrilled to have managed to book Gosford House for our grand finale ball. The house, which is the seat of the Earls of Wemyss and March, is set in 5,000 acres of combined coast and parkland in East Lothian and was one of the last great architectural commissions of the celebrated Scots Architect, Robert Adam, completed in 1800.

It’s only open to the public 20 days each year, and has hosted external events for only four years.  So this is a very exclusive opportunity to experience a proper ball in the residence.  The staff are very keen to work with us to make this as authentic an experience as possible. Gosford House has connections with both World Wars – the 10^th Earl, Francis Charteris, is said to have predicted WWI ten years before it occurred, and the house was commandeered during WWII and eventually became a prisoner-of-war camp. Our provisional ball programme:

• Dressing (at Gosford House) 18:00 to 19:00
• Piped into the house: 19:00 and reception from the Gosford House hosts
• Drinks Reception 19:15 to 20:00
• Dancing from 20:00 to 23:00 or so with a couple of breaks to enjoy the two-course buffet (some drinks included)
• Carriages: 23:30

This is a very special evening – a chance to get that real Downton Abbey experience in a real Scottish stately home!
