Nova Scotia Jazz Band at Fife Jazz Club
Apr 13 @ 14:00

The Nova Scotia Jazz Band is firmly in the tradition of the swinging Dixieland groups led by Eddie Condon, Muggsy Spanier, and Alex Welsh. Featuring the lyrical yet powerful trumpet of Lorne Cowieson, the banjo and guitar wizardry of Duncan ‘Fingers’ Findlay, the genuinely swinging string bass of Andy Sharkey and the clarinet, saxophones and vocals of John Burgess the NSJB are a fresh take on the classic jazz style. Since 2009 the band have appeared at the Glastonbury, Kelburn, Crail, Biggar and Swaledale Festivals, and the Tarragona, Keswick, Bute, Pershore, Shetland, Southport, Ayr, Lockerbie, Glasgow, Fife, Inverurie, Swanage and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals and have played concerts all over the UK with their special guests Roy Williams, Jim Fryer, Ian Bateman, Brian Kellock, Digby Fairweather, Richard Leach, Graham Smith, Gregor Beck and Forrie Cairns.

Dance the night away to the incredible sophisticated sounds of the Eliot Murray Big Band at this Twenties/Thirties night in support of “Believe in Children” Barnardos. We’ve been asked along to perform and do our “thing” in terms of getting the dancing going – but this is a fantastic, not-to-be-missed opportunity to dance to one of the very very best Big Bands around! We have known Eliot for many years and he is a band leader par excellence – his music really swings! A great night for swing dancers and ballroom dancers alike – and masses of space in The Brunton’s swanky new Venue 1. It’s huge! With a lovely lovely floor. Have I sold it to you yet?

The Last Hurrah – Ragtime, Tango and the Centenary of the Fox-Trot @ School of Dance and Music
Aug 3 @ 19:00

A week-long dance and cultural programme, focusing on the social dances that were popular around the time of the outbreak of the Great War. Featuring Richard Powers, from Stanford University’s Dance Division, and other workshop leaders from Fly Right Dance Company.

Our programme is still being tweaked, but here are some key highlights for you:

Sunday 3 August
Evening: Opening Ceilidh. Meet and greet – orientation. Venue: Haddington Corn Exchange

Monday 4 August – Friday 8 August
Mornings (09:30 – 13:00): Dance workshops with Richard Powers and members of the Fly Right Dance. Co. Details of the workshop programme to be finalised, but it will certainly cover Ragtime dances, Tango and the Fox-Trot.

Afternoon: Various cultural excursions, including a visit to our local distillery at Glenkinchie, and other tourist attractions. One afternoon will be a tea dance – venue yet to be confirmed but looking likely to be in one of the world-famous Spiegeltents which will be at Fringe By The Sea in North Berwick.

Evenings: mostly free time – as it is Edinburgh Festival time, every spare venue is given over to being a venue for shows, so there is not much scope for social dancing at this time of year. However, we’re looking to organise one other social dance event on one evening – possibly another, more formal, ceilidh. It may be that people might like to take in one of the thousands of shows that will be on in Edinburgh in the evenings!

Saturday 9 August
Morning (09:30 – 13:00) – final workshop session to prepare for the ball.
Lunch and Afternoon – Free time
Evening: Full costumed ball with a 1914 theme. Venue is the amazing Gosford House – A true Downton-style experience!
